General Statement of Duties
 
  Assists the Chief Utilities Operator with the operation, laboratory and maintenance functions of the Water and Wastewater systems of the Town of Stantonsburg.
 
Distinguishing Features of the Class
 An employee in this class performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled operational, laboratory and maintenance duties supporting the utilities functions of the Town’s Water and Wastewater systems. Work is closely supervised and performed on different days and schedules to provide safe and effective utilities services. Work includes assisting with the monitoring of the Water and Wastewater treatment operation through observation, taking readings, and documenting the results of standard chemical and biological tests, and occasionally making necessary adjustments in the process as conditions and test results dictate. Other duties include but are not limited to assisting with the performance of standard laboratory duties, tests and handling plan, facilities and ground maintenance. Work also includes record keeping of the laboratory and other monitoring activities.
 
 The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and water treatment plant operations including working in inside and outside environments and in extreme temperatures. The employee may be exposed to various hazards such as loud noises, mechanical machinery, electrical hazards, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, oils, poor ventilation, and working in small spaces. Work around wastewater is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Utilities Operator and is reviewed by observation, conferences, and records for adherence to operational requirements, instructions, and safety practices.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Operates, monitors, and cleans various systems and equipment of the Wastewater and Water Treatment Plant systems, including lift stations, wells, and other and equipment necessary to the proper function and treatment of the Water and Wastewater systems.
  • Cleans buildings and grounds; removes trash, sweeps and mops floors.
  •  Pressure washing tanks and equipment.
  • Assist with reading meters, testing treatment processes, adding chemicals and other duties associated with water and wastewater treatment.
  • Handles daily routines when supervisor is absent. Assist line maintenance and construction. Performs maintenance and repairs to utility equipment in water and wastewater systems, as delegated.
  • Attend training to upgrade your own skills, learn about new regulations and retain certifications.
 
Additional Job Duties
Assists with other public works functions as needed. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of maintenance and ground tasks.
  •  Willingness to learn water and wastewater functions and the laboratory tasks that support each.
  •  Skill in the use of hand tools.
  •  Skills in the operation of maintenance and grounds equipment.
  •  Ability to learn how to read dials, gauges and other instruments.
  •  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.
  •  Ability to maintain and keep records and provide input into reports.
  •  Willingness to obtain necessary state certifications within timeframes established by the Town.
 
Physical Requirements
 
  • Must be able to physically perform basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to read gauges, dials, and to observe moving parts of machines, to record and review written records, to use measurement devices and to operate motor vehicles and maintenance equipment.
 
Desirable Education and Experience
 
Graduation from high school or high school equivalency, and/or supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology, and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water or wastewater treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Special Requirements
 
Possession of Water Treatment Grade C (C-Well) and the ability to obtain Grade 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator within 12 months.
NC Driver’s License.
 
Pay and Benefits
 
Hiring Range: $20.00 hourly-$25.00 hourly (DOQ)
 
Salary commensurate with experience and education, based on the town’s pay scale and policies. Additional compensation may be available for candidates with specific qualifications or certifications
